Why Vaccinations Matter

Vaccines are the most cost-effective way to protect your pet from preventable — and often life-threatening — infectious diseases. At Woodforest Animal Hospital, Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Williams follow the latest AAHA vaccination guidelines to develop a schedule tailored to your pet's age, lifestyle, and risk factors.

Whether you have a new puppy, an older rescue dog, or an indoor cat, we'll build a vaccination plan that keeps your animal protected without over-vaccinating. We track your pet's history and send reminders when booster doses are due.

Vaccine Types

Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines

Core vaccines are recommended for every pet regardless of lifestyle because they protect against diseases that are widespread, severe, or transmissible to humans. For dogs, these include Rabies and DA2PP. For cats, Rabies and FVRCP are core vaccines.

Non-core (lifestyle) vaccines are recommended based on your pet's specific risk factors — where they live, whether they go outdoors, if they visit dog parks or boarding facilities, and what wildlife they may encounter. In the Montgomery, TX area, Leptospirosis is strongly recommended for dogs due to local wildlife exposure around lakes and wooded areas.

Dr. Alvarez and Dr. Williams will assess your pet's individual risk factors at each wellness visit and recommend the most appropriate vaccination protocol. We never push vaccines your pet doesn't need.

Common Questions

Vaccination FAQs

What vaccines does my dog need every year?

In Texas, Rabies is required by law and typically given every 1–3 years. Bordetella (kennel cough) and Leptospirosis are recommended annually for most dogs in the Montgomery area. Your DA2PP combo is typically given every 3 years after the initial puppy series. Dr. Alvarez will review your dog's specific history at each visit.

How often does my dog need a vet checkup?

Annual wellness exams are recommended for adult dogs. Puppies should be seen every 3–4 weeks from 8 weeks until 16 weeks of age for their vaccine series. Senior dogs (7+) benefit from twice-yearly exams to catch age-related conditions early.

Can I vaccinate my indoor cat?

Yes. Even indoor cats need core vaccines — Rabies and FVRCP — because they can be exposed through windows, escape outside, or come into contact with other animals. FeLV (Feline Leukemia) is recommended for cats with any outdoor access.

Do you offer payment plans for vaccines?

Yes. We partner with Cherry to offer flexible payment options, allowing you to spread the cost of veterinary care over time. Ask our front desk team about Cherry financing at your next visit.

Do you vaccinate horses or large animals?

Woodforest Animal Hospital specializes in dogs and cats. For equine and large animal vaccination services, please visit our sister clinic Lone Star Equine at lonestarvet.com, which is located at the same address.
